As parents, we all want to pass on good habits to our children, and that includes taking care of their oral health. However, many of us are still holding on to outdated beliefs and practices from our own childhood. It's time to set the record straight and embrace the latest in children's dentistry.
Myth #1: Flossing is only for grown-ups. This couldn't be further from the truth. Children can start learning to floss as soon as they have two teeth that touch. Show them how to floss and let them know it's an important part of their oral hygiene routine. By the time they are 7 or 8 years old, they should be able to floss on their own.
Myth #2: Brushing immediately after meals is the best practice. While we were told to brush right after meals as children, today's consensus is that it can actually do more harm than good. The acids and sugar in our food weaken tooth enamel, and brushing immediately after a meal can be as abrasive as sandpaper on that weakened enamel. Wait for at least 45 minutes to let your mouth recover naturally from the acid assault and allow saliva to do its job. Encourage your child to wash down their food with water to help the process.
Myth #3: Tongue brushing is not necessary for children. Bacteria can happily reside on the tongue of both children and adults, causing bad breath. Teach your child to gently brush their tongue back and forth and side to side to remove these unwanted guests. Make it fun by asking them to show off their best "sticky-out-tongue" face in front of the mirror.
Myth #4: One brush fits all. It's tempting to let your child choose the coolest-looking toothbrush, but it's not the best practice. Different brushes cater to different needs, depending on your child's diet, brushing habits, and the health of their enamel. At Dr Max Dental Care, our team of dentists and therapists will assess your child's oral health and recommend a toothbrush and toothpaste best suited to their needs. This will ensure that your child is getting the best care and results.
At Dr Max Dental Care, we believe that the earlier children are introduced to good oral hygiene habits, the more likely they are to continue them for life. By breaking these myths and instilling healthy habits, we can set our children on the path to a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Contact our team today for advice and tailor-made assistance to ensure your child's oral health is in good hands.
